Working Principle of a Gear Hobbing Machine

A gear hobbing machine is a specialized piece of equipment used to process gears by means of a generating process known as "hobbing." This machine utilizes a hob-an advanced cutting tool with multiple cutting edges-to progressively cut the tooth profile into the workpiece (gear blank).

 

 

Working Principle

 

 

1. Setup and Alignment

 

 

1.1 Mounting the Workpiece

 

 

Gear Blank: The cylindrical workpiece, often referred to as a gear blank, is securely mounted on the workpiece spindle.

 

Alignment: The centerline of the gear blank is precisely aligned with the centerline of the hob spindle.

 

 

1.2 Installing the Hob

 

 

Hob Tool: A cylindrical cutting tool known as the hob, which has helical cutting edges corresponding to the desired gear teeth profile, is mounted onto the hob spindle.

 

Angle Setting: The hob is set at an appropriate angle relative to the gear blank, typically the lead angle of the hob.

2. Generating Process

 

 

2.1 Rotational Movement

 

 

Simultaneous Rotation: Both the hob and the workpiece spindle rotate simultaneously. The rotational speeds are synchronized based on the number of teeth being cut and the gear ratio required.

 

 

2.2 Axial Feed

 

 

Hob Movement: The hob moves axially along the gear blank in a continuous feed motion, contributing to the progressive cutting of the gear teeth.

 

Feed Rate: The axial feed rate is carefully controlled to ensure gradual material removal and precise tooth profile generation.

 

 

3. Cutting Action

 

 

3.1 Gear Tooth Fabrication

 

 

Incremental Cuts: The hob`s cutting edges engage with the gear blank, removing material in an incremental manner to form the gear teeth.

 

Continuous Process: As the hob rotates and moves axially, it continuously cuts the gear teeth by the generating process, creating the gear profile progressively.

 

 

3.2 Chip Formation

 

 

Material Removal: The cutting action generates small metal chips that are removed from the gear blank, forming the desired gear teeth while maintaining high precision.

4. Synchronization and Control

 

 

4.1 Indexing Mechanism

 

 

Indexing: The machine uses an indexing mechanism to ensure that the gear blank rotates in precise increments equal to the angular pitch of the gear teeth.

 

Synchronization: The rotational speeds of the hob and the workpiece must be precisely synchronized to maintain the correct pitch and profile of the gear teeth.

 

 

4.2 CNC Control (Modern Machines)

 

 

CNC System: Modern gear hobbing machines are often equipped with CNC (Computer Numerical Control) systems that automate and control the synchronization, speed, and feed rates.

 

Programmed Cuts: The CNC system uses pre-programmed parameters to execute the hobbing process with high precision and repeatability.

 

 

5. Completion and Inspection

 

 

5.1 Finishing the Cut

 

 

Full Passes: The hobbing operation typically requires multiple passes until the desired depth and profile of the gear teeth are achieved.

 

Final Check: Once the cutting is complete, the machine performs a final check to ensure all teeth are uniformly cut.

 

 

5.2 Quality Control

 

 

Inspection: The finished gear is inspected for dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and overall quality.

 

Adjustments: If necessary, adjustments are made to the machine setup or operating parameters to correct any deviations in subsequent gear hobbing operations.
